NOT TAKING BREAKS – Just because you are a speed reader doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take breaks from time to time. I don’t mean that you have to curl up and take a nap either, but just resting your eyes from time to time is essential to maintaining your reading speed and comprehension level. If you or your eyes are tired, no speed reading trick in the world is going to help.
DISTRACTIONS – When I got my new office I purchased a widescreen HDTV and I would keep ESPN on all the time, then I noticed a dip in my productivity. Why? Because I was allowing myself to be distracted by the television. When you are reading, turn off the TV and the radio. Do not allow any distractions at all – even in the background. You will find yourself humming along to your favorite tunes and completely lost in the text with no idea what it is you have just read.
REGRESSION – This is when you feel the need to go back and read a section over again. It usually happens when you have messed up #1 and #2 above! Have you ever been so tired that you have to read the same passage multiple times – or so distracted that you had to read it again because you lost concentration? That is regression. The fix? Take breaks and do not allow any distractions!
